TTB-Can You Stand The Rain?
Presented in Collaboration with Real Life Aquatics
When the rain starts coming down, most of us are thinking about getting inside, staying dry, and hoping the roads clear up.
But what happens when the rain doesn't stop?
For this Train the Block session, we partnered with Real Life Aquatics to talk about recent flooding, heavy rainfall, and the water related dangers that can happen in places that may not normally experience flooding.
This blog is a brief synopsis of what we covered, not the full training. Want the full conversation? Take the class!
When Water Moves, Things Change
We discussed microbursts, flash flooding, and rapidly rising water, including how quickly these conditions can affect transportation, road safety, homes, and entire communities.
Flooding doesn't always happen where you expect it.
A road you drive every day can suddenly become unsafe. Water can cover hazards you cannot see. A vehicle can lose traction or become stranded. And what looks like a small amount of moving water can have much more force than you realize.
Never underestimate moving water.
Floodwater Does Not Mean Clean Water
We also discussed what happens after the water goes down.
Stagnant floodwater can create serious health and safety concerns. Floodwater can contain bacteria, sewage, chemicals, debris, and other contaminants. What looks like a puddle can become a hidden health hazard.
Flooding can also damage homes, belongings, electrical systems, vehicles, and other property.
The danger doesn't necessarily end when the rain stops.
Know Your Water Skills
One of the biggest conversations was the importance of knowing how to swim and knowing how to assess a situation before entering the water.
Swimming is an important life skill, but swimming ability does not mean you should enter dangerous floodwater.
Sometimes the safest response is recognizing:
“I don't need to get in there.”
Water is a force of life. We drink it, cook with it, bathe in it, swim in it, and depend on it every day.
But when we are not prepared or aware of how quickly water can change, that same force can become deadly.
From Pool Management to Lifeguarding
And who better to have this conversation with than Real Life Aquatics?
They're the water safety experts covering everything from pools and lifeguarding.
Water safety isn't just about knowing how to swim. It's understanding water, recognizing risks, knowing when conditions are unsafe, and knowing how to respond.

Take the Next Class
What you read here is only a glimpse of what we covered during Can You Stand the Rain?
Train the Block is about bringing practical education into our communities so we can recognize risks, understand our resources, and be better prepared before an emergency happens.
Water is powerful. Respect it. Understand it. Prepare for it.
